Mesothelioma Types
Mesothelioma is a particularly nasty form of cancer that many people don't know about. In this article, we take a look at the three main Mesothelioma types you can be expected to get should you be unlucky.Mesothelioma is a catch all phrase used when discussing a cancer of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a lining in the chest and abdomen that is used to create a cushioned, lubricated surface around the major organs including the lungs and heart. People discuss this form of cancer as though there is one type, but there are really three variations. Let's take a look at the different types.
Pleural Mesothelioma is by far the most common form of cancer you will find in this niche. This refers to the lining around the lungs. It occurs in more than 60 percent of all Mesothelioma cases. The cancer is characterized by lung issues including difficulty breathing, raspy coughing and blood in said coughing. The problem is cancer grows in the mesothelium around the lungs and expands that lining. This results in the lungs being crowded and movement being restricted.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
This is the second type of Mesothelioma. It is found in the abdomen of the body. Once again, the mesothelium lining in the area becomes inflamed with cancer cell growth. This causes the organs in the abdomen to be crowded and a significant amount of pressure to occur. The end result is pain in the abdomen that can be extreme. When it comes to Mesothelioma types, this one occurs roughly 25 percent of the time.
Pericardial Mesothelioma
Cardial of course refers to the heart. With Pericardial Mesothelioma, the cancer is found in the mesothelium lining around the heart. As you can imagine, this is seriously bad news. The cancer can and does spread to the heart. The diagnoses is often terminal. Fortunately, less than five percent of Mesothelioma cases are Pericardial.
These are the three most common Mesothelioma types we see. There are other versions that appear very rarely. If you believe you may have a problem or know someone who does, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
